Fly fishing is such a pleasurable pursuit that has a lot of men and women hooked. The excitement of chasing the fish, the beauty of an isolated stream, the solidarity, and friendship with fellow anglers all contribute to make fly fishing an addictive hobby or sport for many.
If you’re new to fly fishing, let me brief you in some of the things you will need when you go fly fishing.
The most basic equipment that you’ll need is rod, reel and line. In addition, you’ll also need waders, vests and other accessories such as hats, sunglasses, fly boxes and nets.
Rod/Reel/Line -These are the most essential equipment in fly fishing. A sure way to start is to buy a combo rod and reel with line included called a starter package. At least with this package you can be sure that the equipment is correctly balanced and matched. This will make your casting better. A starter package is also usually less expensive than buying the elements separately.
Waders/Boots – Waders may not be as essential as rod/reel/line, but I assure it’s is something you’ll badly need when you fly fish. Waders keep you dry in the water and warm and comfortable out of it as you pursue your fish. As an outdoor sport, you are likely to suffer from the onslaught of the elements – rain, wind, snow, sleet and sun.
Waders come in varying styles and sizes, and are made of different materials. There are hip waders that only cover the legs and chest waders that reach your chest. There are waders with built-in boots and stockingfoot waders where you need to buy boots separately. The cost of waders depends mainly on the materials used. The expensive ones are made of breathable materials while he cheaper ones are made of Neoprene, rubber or PVC.
Vest – You may consider a vest a non-essential for an angler, but I assure you you’ll need one to keep all the necessary gear you’ll need – extra leaders, an assortment of flies, tippets of various sizes, and of course some munchies. Vests usually come with easy –to- reach pockets where you can put all your gear.
Nets – You’ll need nets to land your fish. Nets will keep the fish submerge in water as you remove the fly.
Hat – You’ll need a wide brim hat to shield your face from the sun and keep your face and head warm if the weather is cold.
Fly box – A fly box will keep your flies well organized.
A pair of sunglasses – A pair of sunglasses will be your eye’s protection from the sun and also from getting hooked by your fly.
You don’t go to war without a gun and the complete battle gear. In the same manner, you don’t go fly fishing without the right equipment and gear.

“How do you know if trout are feeding? What are they feeding on? And, where are they feeding? Are questions commonly asked by a newbie to fly fishing.
“How do you know if trout are feeding? What are they feeding on? And, where are they feeding? Are questions commonly asked by a newbie to fly fishing.
To know if trout are feeding, you need to pay close attention to the water, searching for a boil, rise or ripple. These are signs that there are trout in action beneath the water.
What is important to anglers is to be able not only to note these signs, but also to be prepared with the appropriate equipment. They should also be fast to react to the disturbance of the water surface and the trout’s rise which could be any of the following:
Nebbing rise. Nebbing rise, also called the kiss, occurs when the trout thrusts its nose past the surface of the water when heavy hatches of flies drifts above the trout’s head. It’s an easy fast meal, and an angler can use a fly with a little water on it.
Boiling rise. This is a simple rise where you’ll see expanding rings from a point where the trout rises. This could mean that the trout is feeding just below the surface on larger insects. This rise usually appears in late evenings or early mornings. A boil is akin to a mark that pinpoints the area where trout is feeding.
Although it’s frequently difficult for fly-fishers to snare the trout as soon as it made a boil, a boiling rise signifies a hot spot where trout persists on returning to the same place or that a number of fish are aggressively feeding on that area.
Bulging rise. This is a tricky rise that most anglers fail to spot. This happens when trout ascend to the surface where only the fish’s back can be seen and when they’re feeding on nymphs underneath the surface.
If you know the various kinds of rises and the signs to look for, you’ll be able to decide if the trout are feeding or not. If the rises are too few and far between, it indicates that the fish are being too wary and only checking out the food when they rise.
Fly Fishing Helps Amarillo Veterans Heal
Fly Fishing Helps Amarillo Veterans Heal

Fly guys from Amarillo are helping injured veterans cope with their physical and emotional scars with fly fishing.
Fly guys from Amarillo are helping injured veterans cope with their physical and emotional scars with fly fishing.
Austin McWhorter, President of Amarillo Fly Guys said that they are around to help veterans deal with anything they’re going through, be it mental or physical scar by having fun fly fishing.
The group is a chapter of the Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing for Amarillo. With fly fishing, veterans can get their mind off their problems and heal. They learn to make flies, how to fly fish, and even go out on fly fishing expeditions.
According to Donovan Wainwright, an American veteran who served his country for seven years thinks that it’s the tediousness and “smallness” of the activities that help take their mind off of everything. They forget whatever is happening to them and all they think about is how to catch the next fish.
Wainwright was wounded and medically discharged from the army added that being a member of the Amarillo Fly Guys helped in the transition.
Kyle McAdams, founder of the group has observed that in spite of having a lot of other programs for veterans in their area, many of these programs are one-time affairs and not permanent or continuous.
McAdams said that the healing process for many of the veterans, specifically for those who are coping with post traumatic stress syndrome and more, is a continuing process. According to McAdams this is the best way to repay these veterans for their service to the country.
To McAdams this is a win-win situation where once the veterans learn how to fly fish, they can go on a fishing trip with their families, thus healing not only the former soldier but their families as well.
Every second Tuesday of each month at 7 pm, the group convenes at the VFW.
Women and Fly Fishing

It is supposed that women have been involved in fly fishing for as long as men. It was a woman who wrote the first book published in English. An excerpt of the book “The Origins of Angling” written by John McDonald in1957 cited that what is considered as the first sport fishing essay published in English “The Treatise of fishing with an Angle” was written by a woman. The author of the said essay is Dame Juliana Berners who, according to legends, is a noblewoman and a nun. She was also the first woman who wrote works published in the English language. The essay was translated by John McDonald from old English to the more understandable and easy to read modern English.
In McDonald’s book, he illustrates the many facets of fishing including the fishing tackle used when the essay was published in 1496. The book even contains a chapter on how to create a fish hook from a needle, deemed to be a woman’s tool. Obviously, at that time there were no available steel hooks.
Fly fishing was already one way of fishing even during that time. In fact, the Dame Juliana’s treatise made mention of the twelve fly patterns for the first time in English. It is alleged that the treatise was the source of the terms “angler and angling” to describe a fly fisher and fly fishing. The earliest flies which are deemed to be thousands of years old were made of hair and bird feathers fastened to ivory hooks or bones. These are thought of as made by women because of its feminine air.
Surely, Dame Juliana and the other women of her time tied their own flies and caught fish with them 500 years ago. Undoubtedly, women can do extremely well in the fly fishing sport. Almost certainly they always had and will have when they have the opportunity. But while pluckily forging ahead in a sport that is evidently male dominated, the modern woman fly fisher needs specially designed apparels. These are gears that will make the experience enjoyable and make them fish their best. They don’t need to wear downsized men’s fly fishing gear. Finally, manufacturers of fishing gears and apparels such as waders, vests, boots and jackets are now designing and producing them for women.

Types of Fishing Reels
Types of Fishing Reels
You may have great looking chestwaders that are warm, comfortable and fit you like a glove, but that’s not all you need to make a fishing trip an awesome experience. You need to have the right kind of fishing equipment, specifically the right type of rod and reel for the type of fishing you’re planning. The reel is the mechanism used to wind and store the fishing line. It is attached to the handle of a fishing pole or rod.
Fishing reels for a certain type of fishing is available in several configurations according to the needs of a particular type of fishing. Being aware of the distinctions between the different reels will aid you in your choice for the best reel that you’ll need.
Some of the most popular types of reel are the following:
Open face spinning reel
This is a very versatile reel that can be used for all types of fish that is a great favorite of a lot of anglers. It’s available in heavy weight great for surf fishing to ultra light used for angling freshwater pan fish. What differentiates it from a conventional reel with a revolving spool used for casting and retrieving is its fixed spool mounted on the base of the reel. The advantage of a fixed pool is that once the cast is done, the uncoiling of the line stops. This prevents a recoil, and for a newbie, this is a great way to become quickly used to this type of reel.
Bait casting reel
A bait casting reel is also called a revolving spool reel or a conventional reel. This is a very popular type of reel for freshwater anglers since this type of reel gives an angler more accuracy and control on the placement of lure. Unfortunately, this is also trickier to use than other reel types. But with constant practice, correct procedure and quality equipment, you can learn how to fish with a bait casting reel like a professional.
Spin casting reel
A spin casting reel is a combination of a bait casting and open face spinning reels and usually the choice of a beginner in angling since it is the easiest type of reel to use. A spin cast reel is attached above the rod and is provided with an enclosure for the spool with a hole from where the line passes through.
Fly reel
Fly-fishing or fly-casting reel is a relatively simple mechanism made for light lures. It usually has a single- action design that is manually operated. It got its name from the lures which are called flies. These lures or baits are made of lightweight objects such as threads, feathers, and furs made to look like an insect, fish, worm or other fish food.
Other types of reel include Centrepin reel very popular in Australia, and the Triggerspin or Underspin reel which is basically a spin cast reel.
Once you’ve chosen the best kind of reel that will serve your purpose, your next job is to see to it that the reel is perfectly matched with your fishing rod. Most of these reels are sold in a combination reel and rod. If you still don’t have a rod, then getting yourself a combo or reel and rod set will be to your best advantage.
